Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT) | NCSBN

Important Notice: This CAT video will be updated soon to reflect changes in the test design effective Oct. 1, 2020. NCSBN is leaving this version of the video available to provide information about CAT. However, because of this, there are a few inconsistencies in the video related to the test design that are no longer correct.

The following is a list what will change Oct 1 and the new, updated information.

  • The minimum number of items for both the RN and PN exam is 75 rather than 75 and 85, respectively.
  • The maximum number of items for both the RN and PN exam is 145 rather than 265 and 205.
  • The total test time for both the RN and PN exam will be five hours rather than six and five, respectively.
  • When a candidate runs out of time, the final ability estimate is computed from all responses on all the items completed on the exam. If it is above the standard, it is a pass; otherwise, the exam will be a fail.

NCSBN is pleased to be producing a new CAT video to be posted soon. A full list of changes to the exam is available here
